When you think of chana, one specific thing comes to your mind, chana masala. Chana masala is a popular north Indian dish based on the cooked chopped chana or bengal gram.
Many people love this dish for its unique taste and flavors. Before I tell you how to make tasty chana masala spice let me tell you something about chanar dal aka cholenar dal/ kadale kaali mirch ki dal . This delicious lentil is very healthy for all Indian diets. It has many health benefits that are listed below:
1) Chole(cholenar dal) or chanar (bengle)dal has high fiber content which helps reduce constipation in most people.
2) Cholenar dal is one of the sources which provide choline, a nutrient that helps improve memory and brain function.

3) Cholenar dal has a large amount of proteins and it also provides essential amino acids.
4) Chanar dal , cholenar dal or chanar (bengle)dal is high in carbohydrates and thus your body gets energy from eating cholener dal .

How to make cholener dal or chana masala :
Now that you know cholener dal or chana masala has amazing health benefits it will be better if you learn how to make chana masala at home rather than buying chana masala from outside.

Ingredients : cholener dal or chanar dal – 1 cup, jeera – 1 tsp, salt to taste, oil – 3 tbsp, garam masala – 2tsp(optional), haldi – a big pinch, chholay – 3-4 tbsp(chopped cholenar dal), kali mirch – 2 tsp(slightly crushed black pepper), tejpatta/ Indian bay leaves – 2 chopped in chote chane ka size (optional)
Wash cholener dal or chanar dal 2-3 times. Soak cholenar dal in water for at least 6 hours. Do not discard the water after soaking cholenar dal . Cook cholener dal with 1 cup of water , salt and little oil. Boil cholenar when cholenar is half done, add chholay to it. Add garam masala , tejpatta, kali mirch ,haldi and crushed black pepper when cholenar has boiled well. Finally add chopped cholay (green peas)and boil with cholener (bengle)dal . Your delicious chana masala is ready to enjoy.
Let me explain cholay to you. cholar dal is also called cholay, cholay ki dal or chana masala mix. chana masala mix can be used as a chasni too for pakoras and snacks. When cholar dal is boiled with water it increases from 3/4 cup to 1 cup(1 cup=250ml).
